Love the look of stone homewares but not the price tag or the weight? Go plastic fantastic! Raid your kitchen cabinets for old bowls and cups – or pick up a few at a bargain shop – you can transform into faux granite pieces. All you need to do is glue, prime and spray your way to luxe-looking pedestal bowls using a fast-setting adhesive and special-effect paint. It’s fun and easy!

Clean plastic bowls and cups of any dust or grime. Apply primer around base of first plastic bowl.

Apply primer to base of second bowl.

Run a bead of glue on top of primer on bowls.

Position one bowl base on top of the other and hold until glue sets, about 30 seconds.

Repeat to attach  a tall plastic cup to a plastic bowl base. Make as many pedestal bowls as desired.

Wearing a face mask and using cardboard box spray booth, apply a coat of plastic primer spray paint to exterior of pedestal bowls. Leave to dry. Apply primer to interior of the top bowl. Leave to dry.

Finish exterior of pedestal bowls in granite effect spray paint in either light or dark grey. Hold can about 20cm from surface and spray smooth strokes from side to side. Leave to dry. Multiple light coats are better than 1-2 heavy coats. Paint interior of top bowl. Leave to dry.
