The German woodworking machinery industry has achieved record production and export values, with production reaching Euro 3.6 billion in 2022, an increase of 8.3% from the previous year. The largest individual markets for German woodworking machinery manufacturers in 2022 were the U.S., with an export value of Euro 307 million, up 20% from the previous year, followed by the People's Republic of China, with an export value of Euro 255 million, down 1% from the previous year. France had an export value of Euro 154 million, up 14%, followed by Poland and Austria. Exports to Great Britain reached Euro 119 million, up 36%, while exports to Italy reached Euro 126 million, up 26%, both countries with pronounced investment promotion programs.
A striking development was a near quadrupling of exports to India to Euro 46 million. For the traditional markets in Europe, manufacturers do not expect further growth in the current year in view of the weaker order intake. By contrast, the outlook for business in North America remains good. China is expected to retain its position as the largest sales market in the Asian region despite all trade policy differences.
The German woodworking machinery industry is entering the next five days of the LIGNA trade show (May 15 - 19 in Hanover) full of optimism, despite falling order intake in the current year 2023. According to Dr. Bernhard Dirr, Managing Director of VDMA Woodworking Machinery, "the industry is operating at a high level and is looking ahead with confidence overall" despite the challenges it faces.
