Dosing pump for flocculants in sludge dewatering

Accurate dosage of polymers plays a central role in sludge dewatering processes for proper sludge treatment.Reliable dosing technology is therefore essential.

Dewatering sludges can reduce their volume, which can reduce costs associated with storage and disposal by up to 75%.In this sludge conditioning, certain polymers are used as flocculants, among other things. However, the treatment of sludge is subject to strict legal requirements worldwide.Suitable solutions are therefore necessary for adding these polymers.

For this purpose, pump supplier Watson-Marlow has expanded its Qdos metering pump series. The new Qdos 60 PU model delivers accurate and repeatable dispensing of many difficult-to-process media including viscous liquids and aliphatic hydrocarbons. It offers a linear delivery of up to 60 l/h at a pressure of up to 5 bar.The pump is compatible with complex polymers such as polyacrylamide (PAM) and other flocculants and precipitants used in wastewater treatment.

The dosing pump is based on the manufacturer's decades of experience and research and is optimized for low-shear and gentle pumping. This protects the polymer chains and product integrity. As with the previous model Qdos 20 PU, the Qdos 60 PU also uses a hose material that is resistant to aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Peristaltic pumps offer significant advantages over diaphragm pumps in PAM dosing applications, including greater accuracy and reliability. No membranes, valves or seals are required to clog. The new pump is designed in such a way that the patented Renu pump head is the only component that ever needs to be replaced. The pump head enables repeatable, accurate dispensing and long service life in difficult applications. The replacement itself takes less than a minute, after which the pump is practically as new and ready for use again immediately.

Adeel Hassan, Product Manager at Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Solutions, says: “The new Qdos 60 PU expands the application range of our Qdos metering pump series. This versatile range of pumps is suitable for the accurate and safe dosing of liquids at up to 120 l/h and up to 7 bar in various applications and sectors. It is available in different sizes and with different control options depending on your needs.” The provider expects a positive market response for the new model because the pump offers integrated leak detection and an encapsulated pump head. This minimizes operator exposure to chemicals during maintenance.

In the main sewage treatment plant of the Region Heide wastewater association (Schleswig-Holstein), the Qdos 60 PU metering pump already enables problem-free metering of polymers and other hydrocarbons that are difficult to process.“Qdos offers high accuracy, good user-friendliness and easy handling while at the same time offering maximum process reliability,” says operations manager Peter Dohrn. He also confirms the functionality of the pump head: “The first pump head lasted a year without any problems before we replaced it as a preventive measure. And the second pump head has also been working without any problems for six months.Changing the pump head itself only takes a few minutes.” In addition to water and wastewater management, users in the food and beverage industry also benefit from the dosing pump model. The pump also processes fats and oils and has certification according to FDA and EC 1935/2004.

The Engineering Summit is the central networking event for European plant engineering. The congress will take place for the ninth time from September 19th to 20th and serves as a platform for exchange among managers in plant engineering. At the upcoming Engineering Summit, which is jointly organized by the Large Plant Engineering Working Group in the VDMA and CHEMIE TECHNIK, the focus will be on aspects of decarbonization, transformation of energy systems as well as aspects of plant engineering resources and technologies. The venue is Darmstadt.Further information at www.engineering-summit.de
