At the latest spring/summer runway shows, Parisian brand Ami tied red and olive-green versions around male models’ necks to liven up leather jackets and sport coats, and, at Emporio Armani, patterned kerchiefs accompanied tailoring. Meanwhile, in the real world, George Vlagos, the owner of Chicago menswear store Independence, said he can barely keep the bandanas by Japanese fashion brand Kapital in stock. “[They] are the bestselling product in our store by far.”

Whether casually strung from your neck or peeking out from a jacket pocket, a bandana lets you add easy, affordable intrigue to an ensemble. And you’re at no risk of resembling an extra in a Spaghetti Western: A wave of playful, modern takes from brands like NOMA t.d. and One Ear Brand go beyond classic, cowboy-style paisley designs.
