Have you seen a lot of printed mesh lately? Maybe on Kim Kardashian West, Normani, or Bella Hadid? Fashion trends are cyclical, and one of this summer’s biggest trends harks back to the 1990s. Slightly transparent and majorly sexy, it’s a look that is largely associated with the designer Jean Paul Gaultier, whose slinky, tattooed meshes first sauntered down the runway back in the early ’90s. His spring 1994 show is perhaps his most iconic example of this, as those transparent runway pieces continue to be some of the most sought-after items among serious collectors. Given the craze for vintage JPG is at an all-time high, it’s unsurprising that his style of mesh work is coming back into style, too.

Labels today are channeling the look with their own takes on JPG’s famous graphic, see-through designs. New labels who have done so include Asai, whose sheer, tie-dyed garments have been a hit among stars such as Sza and Rihanna. Contemporary brands such as Sandy Liang and Staud have reworked summer dresses in the treatment too — this summer, they printed pretty florals or striking animal prints onto their meshes. It girls such as Kylie Jenner have also favored the mesh top as a statement piece; she recently styled a neon green, striped mesh turtleneck with a black bra peeking through underneath. Brands like GmbH, Acne Studios, and Molly Goddard have also done this style of long-sleeved mesh top in bright, bold patterns.

Meanwhile, stars such as Kim Kardashian West have gone straight to the source and repeatedly worn archival JPG dresses, too. If you prefer to rock the OG designs like Kardashian West does, you can still find many vintage pieces on resell sites such as The RealReal. There’s plenty of other inspired options to try on the market right now, too. With their brazen patterns and bodycon silhouettes, it’s certainly not for the wallflower. But it is the perfect Zoom piece: It just begs your coworkers to complement it.
